PLC 5: Organizational Structure Design - Pt 1

I’ve chosen to research the film production industry, particularly the company Lionsgate Premiere, an independent film distribution division of Lionsgate, a major American entertainment company. I like many other enjoy film and I think a career in this industry would be fun, exciting, and challenging.

First here is and external analysis of the company. PESTEL analysis can help a film production company understand the external factors that may impact their business and inform strategic decisions regarding production, distribution, and marketing.

Political:

  • Government policies and regulations related to film production and distribution, such as tax incentives, subsidies, and censorship.
  • Changes in political leadership and policies may impact the film industry.

Economic:

  • Economic conditions and trends, such as recession or economic growth, can affect the demand for films and the ability of audiences to spend on entertainment.
  • Changes in currency exchange rates may impact the international distribution and revenue of films.

Social:

  • Changes in demographics and consumer preferences may affect the type of films that are in demand.
  • Social and cultural trends, such as shifting attitudes towards diversity and inclusivity, may impact the content and themes of films.

Technological:

  • Technological advancements may impact the way films are produced, distributed, and consumed, such as the rise of streaming services and the increasing use of special effects in films.
  • Piracy and illegal downloads may negatively impact the revenue of films.

Environmental:

  • Environmental concerns, such as climate change and sustainability, may influence the use of film production resources and the adoption of eco-friendly practices.
  • Natural disasters or extreme weather conditions may disrupt film production schedules and locations.

Legal:

  • Laws and regulations related to intellectual property rights, copyright infringement, and labor laws may impact the production and distribution of films.
  • Changes in regulations related to content and ratings may affect the target audience of films.

Then there are some key factors that would have an impact on this type of organizational structure

Organizational tasks:

The tasks of a film production company include various stages of pre-production, production, and post-production. Depending on the size and complexity of the company's projects, a hierarchical structure with specialized departments for each stage of production might be appropriate. For instance, a department for screenwriting, casting, location scouting, and visual effects. In contrast, a smaller company with simpler tasks might benefit from a flatter structure with less specialization.

Goals:

The goals of a film production company might vary depending on the type of projects they undertake. For example, a company focused on creating low-budget indie films might have different goals than a company producing big-budget blockbuster movies. The organizational structure should align with the company's goals. If the company's goal is to produce a high volume of films with quick turnaround, a functional structure with specialized teams might be appropriate. If the goal is to produce a few high-quality films each year, a more flexible and collaborative structure might be more effective.

Job characteristics:

The characteristics of jobs in a film production company, such as the level of autonomy and skill required, can also influence its structure. For example, if the jobs require a high level of creativity and innovation, a decentralized structure with more freedom and autonomy for employees might be beneficial. If the jobs are more routine and require a high level of coordination and communication, a more hierarchical structure with clear lines of authority might be appropriate.

Growth cycle:

The growth stage of a film production company can also impact its structure. In the early stages of growth, the company might benefit from a flatter structure with less formalization to encourage creativity and flexibility. However, as the company grows and takes on larger and more complex projects, a more hierarchical and formalized structure might be necessary to ensure efficiency and control. Since Lions Gate Premiere is more of an independent film company one could assume their structure is much more simple closer to what other independent producers would also have
